A Pre-Publication Reflection

In spring 2024, a major international and interdisciplinary event on the theme of critiques of power in the arts took place at mdw, initiated by IKM. From this gathering, an engaging book project emerged, which will soon see the light of day.
In the English-language lecture, Prof. Dr. Lisa Gaupp will address Science Wars as symbolic struggles over social institutions, as well as forms of solidarity and epistemologies of power critique.
In the subsequent informal conversation—also in
English—between the three editors, the focus will be on three key
aspects of the book: uncovering power asymmetries, making otherwise
perspectives visible, and discussing counter-strategies.

DR. TATJANA NIKOLIC is part of the IKM research team in the field of Cultural Institution Studies since 2022. She graduated Cultural and Media Management at the University of Arts in Belgrade, Faculty of Dramatic Arts, Study Programme Cultural and Media Management and has completed her PhD with the dissertation “Gender and Age Equality in the Cultural Policy of Serbia” under the supervision of Prof. emerita Milena Dragicevic Sesic.
Since 2013 she is an active member of the Collective of Young Women FEMIX in Serbia, implementing “initiatives and programs for improving gender equality within cultural scene and among young people”, including Girls Rock Camp Serbia. Her book on “Gender Relations in the Alternative Music Scene of Serbia and the region” was awarded by the Institute for Gender Equality of the Province of Vojvodina and published in 2016. In 2021 she co-edited a thematic collection “Digital Horizons of Culture, Arts and Media” with prof. Milena Dragicevic Sesic. Recently she has been member of the research team “Female Leadership in Music: a cross-genre research on women´s roles, agency and collaborative music-making practices in Serbia“ led by prof. Iva Nenic of the Faculty of Music in Belgrade, financed by the Scientific Fund of the Republic of Serbia, project team “Gender Equality generates Cultural Diversity” implemented by the Association of the Independent Cultural Scene of Serbia, funded by the International Fund for Cultural Diversity of the UNESCO, ERASMUS consortium “Reinventing Mentorship in Arts Management” led by Estonian Music and Theatre Academy, as well as the Executive Board of the Association of Theatres for Children and Young Audiences ASSITEJ Serbia.
UNIV.-PROF. DR. LISA GAUPP
is professor of Cultural Institutions Studies at the Department of
Cultural Management and Gender Studies (IKM). She researches and teaches
on topics including cultural institutions/norms, musical practices,
performing arts, arts organizations, migration, inequalities, global
interrelationships, urban spaces, politics and policy, diversity, and
decolonisation. She majored in applied cultural studies
(Kulturwissenschaften) as well as intercultural and international
studies at the universities in Lüneburg and Barcelona before earning her
doctorate in musicology / ethnomusicology at the Hanover University of
Music, Drama and Media (from which she graduated summa cum laude). She
held an interim professorship in cultural sociology at the Leuphana
University of Lüneburg’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences,
which was also where she habilitated with a theses entitled Kulturelle
Diversität in der kuratorischen Praxis: Politik(en) globaler Künste
[Politics of Diversity in the Performing Arts: Curatorial Practices of
the “Global”] (venia legendi: sociology in part. sociology of culture
and the arts).
Gaupp’s research has been funded by numerous bodies including the German Academic Scholarship Foundation and the Lower Saxon Ministry of Science and Culture. Her publications have won several awards, including the Best Research Article Award 2020 (Journal of Cultural Management and Cultural Policy) for “Curatorial Practices of the ‘Global’: Toward a Decolonial Turn in the Museum in Berlin and Hamburg?”, the Best Early Career Research Paper Award in Sociology of Culture (European Sociological Association) for “Festival Curators as Gatekeepers for Sociocultural Diversity”, and the SOPHIA Prize for University Graduates (Soroptimist International) for her dissertation Die exotisierte Stadt – Kulturpolitik und Musikvermittlung im postmigrantischen Prozess [The Exoticized City – Cultural Policies and Music Mediation in a Post-Migrant Process].
She is co-editor of
Diversity and Otherness. Transcultural Insights into Norms, Practices,
Negotiations, of Arts and Power. Policies in and by the Arts, and of a
book series entitled Urban Music Studies (Intellect). She is a member of
the European Sociological Association research network Sociology of
Culture, a founding member of the international research network
Brokering Intercultural Exchange, and a founding member of the cultural
studies organisation Kulturwissenschaftliche Gesellschaft, where she
serves as co-speaker of the section “Transkulturelle Lebenswelten”
(Transcultural Life-Worlds).
Lisa Gaupp has lived in the USA,
Guatemala, Haiti, and Spain, has served as organisational head of the
2009 edition of the International Joseph Joachim Violin Competition
presented by the Hannover-based foundation Stiftung Niedersachsen, and
has three children.
DR ÖZLEM CANYÜREK is a sociologist working at the intersection of cultural policy and education. Her work engages with marginalised knowledges, embodied narratives, aesthetic practices and artistic resilience. She holds a PhD from the Department of Cultural Policy at the University of Hildesheim. Her dissertation, Cultural Diversity in Motion. Rethinking Cultural Policy and Performing Arts in an Intercultural Society, was funded by the European Open Science Cloud and offers a critical intervention into dominant frameworks of cultural policy in Germany.
She conducts independent research, facilitates lectures and workshops and contributes as a jury member to cultural programmes across Germany and beyond. Her research for the German Performing Arts Fund (2021) and ASSITEJ Germany (2023) critically examines the structural limits of institutional diversification processes and foregrounds practice-informed, pluriversal approaches to cultural policy.
Her current work deals with the
archive as a contested space of knowledge and memory, exploring its
potential in decolonising dominant epistemologies. Within the
international training project Reframing Colonial Legacies, she
contributes to horizontal knowledge exchange and reflections on the
epistemic conditions of transcultural collaboration.
She is co-editor
of Decolonial Cultural Practices: Towards Pluriversal Cultural
Institutions and Policies (Routledge, 2025). She is also a member of the
European Sociological Association (ESA) and ASSITEJ Germany.
